Hubless BMX

Russian graphic designer Nikolay Boltachev is making waves in the industrial design quarter with this amazing hubless BMX concept. While this project is still very much on the drawing board — Boltachev is researching hubless wheels or magnetic bearings — we here at Format think the idea is rock-solid and wish him all the best of luck in getting this into production.

Chair pod

A new concept render. Ironic, yet functional. Perfect for fine cigar enthusiasts. Lighting the cigar with a match preserves the flavor of the tobacco whereas gas lighters pollute the flavor.

This would have gone well with our pipe project last semester.

How’s this for an idea? Swedish company Prettypegs has come out with a line of stylish and fun customizable legs that fit any of your IKEA furniture. Ranging in shape from funky to retro to more traditional, the possibilities are endless especially when you take it one step further by choosing the color. Think of all the pieces you can completely change the look of just by swapping out the legs. Brilliant.

Giraffe Street lamp

The project authors, designers, and Chen Wei Lu Yanxin, have decided that you can easily cover the streets, using people instead of “motors”. So, Giraffe Street Lamp is a handsome street light at the same time – children’s swings. If you are actively using this fun day, by night, the device collects sufficient kinetic energy to charge the lantern, and at night regularly cover the street or yard. It stores energy from the kinetic motion of a child swinging, and from a solar panel on top.

Lambda A new scissors concept.

As the umbrella or glasses, scissors are an instrument that has seen a minimal change in the course of their existence, like a perfect object.

The question is: evolution or revolution?

This project targets a meeting point between these two points of view. Giving a new look to the scissors, increasing their symbolic power and representation of identity, and parallel to this search for grater freedom of use of the object through a less restrictive grip that can be interpreted.

GVAL CHAIR BY OOO MY DESIGN

The GVAL Chair, by OOO My Design, is as multifunctional piece that can be (are you ready for it?) a chair, a chair with a footrest, a chair with a footrest & a stool, two chairs, or a chair and two stools. Inspired by the rings of a tree that represent age, the GVAL is made from alternating sheets of bent plywood that create a similar ring-like pattern.
