Smartphones and the Illiterate
Technology can be an invaluable tool, but it can be useless to people without basic literacy. Many people in developing countries are illiterate, and this can be a major hindrance in development. Swiss scientists ran into this challenge when they tried to develop apps to help farmers in India obtain higher yields. The farmers were unable to use the programs because they were illiterate. The scientists responded by developing apps that were icon instead of text based. This approach yielded immediate results, and has a lot of potential for the proliferation of technology among those who would normally not be able to use it to better their lives.
